CCIB helps keep Indigenous businesses at the forefront of the Canadian economy, fostering relationships between Indigenous entrepreneurs and Canada's institutional enterprises to cultivate shared prosperity. The organization was established in 1984 and shifted focus over the years as needs were prioritized. One of the first offerings was a national scholarship and bursary program to assist youth entering business programs and an internship program that started as a joint project between the organization and the federal government to equip young Indigenous professionals with business skills. The flagship Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR formally PAR) was an innovative certification program to benchmark corporate performance in Indigenous relations and continues to help transform workplaces today. Today Canadian Council for Indigenous Business provides more than 2,500 members, including more than 1,300 Certified Indigenous Businesses, with programming, tools, training, network-building, business awards, research, advocacy and national and regional events to advance economic reconciliation across the country and keep Indigenous entrepreneurs positioned for growth.
Towards Sustainable Mining
TSM is a globally recognized sustainability program that supports mining companies in managing key environmental and social responsibilities. TSM was the first mining standard in the world to require site-level reporting with external verification. Each year, mine sites use TSM to report on protocols and indicators focused on social and environmental performance. Qualified external verifiers review and confirm these results every three years with results publicly available for assurance purposes. Each TSM partner is overseen by an independent, multi-interest advisory body, made up of 12 to 15 individuals from Indigenous groups, communities where the industry is active, environmental and social NGOs, and labour and financial organizations, that:
Meets twice a year to provide support and advice for the TSM program.
Conducts a yearly review of a sample of companies' verified results to analyze company systems and practices.
Provides critical perspectives by raising emerging issues of concern beyond those covered under TSM.
